So! Just to recap, we were supposed to be coming back from our trip to the U.S. and then move to Malawi straight away… Right? Well, slight curveball: some of our plans were predicated on us keeping our SA apartment for future travel (albeit open to any visiting staff from Malawi) and that ended up falling through. We were going to keep furniture, linens, etc. here, but with this recent change, we had to completely rearrange our plans. Since we got that information 36 hours before our scheduled flight, we acted fast and postponed it to the 24th so that we could pack up the apartment and move out. Needless to say, this was a bit stressful but at least we found out before we actually left! #Nonprofitlife!
We spent the weekend pulling everything out of every shelf, cupboard and closet to review what we have and what to do with it. We then put everything into separate piles to be shipped, packed (for the plane), given away, sold, etc. We don’t know how long it will take to ship things to Malawi from SA – and we’ve had our share of shipping hiccups [EYE ROLL] – so we want to take as many suitcases on the plane as we can. We have gotten the ball rolling for quotes from potential shippers so we can pick one soon and get a timeline set. Finally, we’ve gotten a few things sold already that wouldn’t make sense to ship/that folks would really appreciate to have here, so that has helped a lot!
Now we just have to: get everything ready to be packed on the 22nd (by the company we’ll eventually choose), stay somewhere locally on the 22nd, do the final walk-through with our apartment management team on the 23rd, and fly out on the 24th. Then, in Malawi, we’ll get our place set up, I’ll get my volunteer placement going, Jon will get settled in the Baylor office full-time (he’s worked there on visits but hasn’t been there full-time since 2012!), etc. (And THEN we’ll be back in SA two weeks later because our next visitors come – my brother, Nadav, and his family!) PHEW!
Again, I’ll say: let’s do this, 2018!
